This Kit Car Was originally conserved and manufactured by me in the late 80s and early 90s and was our interpretation of the Lotus Elan we had every intention of doing a Elan replica to compete with all the Lotus 7 replicas that were and still are around at the time, but after a conversation with Lotus cars and discovering that they still held a currant copy write on the baby Elan and although they had no plans to revive this particular design they would have no choice but to sue me, they were very nice about and liked my idea but its just what they would do, so it was back to the drawing bored, we made changers to move it far enough away from the original design but in keeping with what the Elan could have looked like if it had not had pop up head lights, in fact years later we found a picture of a styling mock up done by the original designer for Colin Chapman half was with pop up head lights and the other half was styled with head lights permanently up looking remarkably close to our Elysee Colin not wishing to back away from a engineering challenge opted for the pop up head lights and the rest was history.
back to the Elysee
it was designed to be a single downer kit at the time and if you used all the running gear from a single downer it was classed as a body re shell job and escaped the SVA test or whatever it was called at the time we chose the popular Vauxhall Chevet as the donor car they were cheap readily available and all the parts were easily adaptable for the single donor and the chap that we went to to help us with designed of the Chassis and bodywork had already used this setup on several other one of custom creations, this being the legendary Pete Farries look up the Doctor Who, Whomobile the Alien!!
after a few years of production running the sales of the kit alongside my bodyshop business i decided to sell the kit car project on and concentrate on the accident and respray side of my business.
after i had sold the original project along with the demonstrator i acquired this car from a customer who had become ill and could not finish he was a smashing chap a old engineer he had completely rebuilt the engine and told me some story about it being special development engine that he had got direct from vauxhall somehow sadly i have no way of verifying if this is true i had all the good intentions of completing this project and keeping it forever a part of my history, i have had it for around twenty years and countless other kit car projects keep this one being pushed to the back and i now realize i need another lifetime to complete them all so i have decided to part with this one hopefully it will get finished and i will be able to see it parked at a kit car show one day
it starts and runs most of the electrics or compleat although this car was built using mostly new parts at the time it will need going through top to bottom the brakes if nothing else will definitely need renewing it needs wheel and tyres and a few other bits all in all it wouldn’t take much to finish it feel free to call me or email me with any questions etc or to arrange a viewing it can be seen at ExoSports Cars Ltd by appointment
i am open to sensible offers i would rather it go to a good home and be finished
KITCARS INTERNATIONAL JANUARY 1995
For a little 1300,it goes very well indeed, being brisk and responsive rather than fast.
Its ability in this department is greatly aided by highly positive and direct steering, a highly useable four speed box and hugely competent anchors.
When wound up it displays all the finer points of a go-kart and handles and holds the road in exemplary fashion taking corners with extremely surefooted panache.”
